The actual Lanes are the southern part of this network of streets. They are elegant and traditional, with a bit of seaside decadence thrown in!
They are separated by North Street from North Laine, a part of town that grew in the early 1800's and became the industrial area. A large part of it narrowly escaped demolition as part of the slum clearance programme in the 1960's and 70's.
Nowadays its colourful streets are lined with independent and friendly shops and cafes.
Often it is confused as 'North Lanes', but its proud residents will always state that this area was christened North Laine, after the field that it was originally built on.
These maps are intended to be cheery and observational. By adding little snippets of history I hope it might encourage people to look at these streets in a different way and explore them further...
