Selfridges opened in Oxford Street in 1909. Its founder, Harry Gordon Selfridge, was a wealthy American businessman, who revolutionised the way British people shop. He created theatre and fun in the store and made it a comfortable place to walk around. Goods were on display, instead of being locked away in cabinets. Events were staged to attract customers. The first public demonstration of television happened here in 1925. Today, Selfridges still has an exciting buzz about it as you walk around, and its trademark yellow bags can be seen swinging on arms all over London.
